I studied Illustration at the Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam, where I specialised in painting and drawing. In 2007 I travelled to Baltimore, USA to study at the Maryland Institute College of Art for a semester, where I focused on the areas of visual storytelling and character development. Storytelling and character development because I love reading: books and words have inspired most of my visual work. Traditional illustration because I like feeling the weight and pressure of the materials I use, touching paper, and mixing colours on my arms when I paint. I used to write and draw on my own skin, so I started getting tattooed, and in 2010 I started learning how to tattoo. That was a one-way trip: anatomy, drawing, painting on skin, and creating living stories became an important part of my mission as an artist. I don’t see any art form as an isolated thing: the richer the influences and inspiration sources, the richer the results. I believe the art world is more interesting when the borders between disciplines become flexible and open the door to a limitless playground.
